The Cherokee story behind this painting called "Lost in the Woods" comes from a book that the artist is writing. It is about an Indian maiden called "White Squirrel" who was left to fend for herself after her family was taken during the Cherokee Removal, better known as the Trail of Tears. Her only friends were the animals who lived in the forest.  This image represents her coming across a lost and abandoned fawn whose mother has been killed. She promises to care for her until she can find her a new mother.
