The Deer Spirit in Cherokee legend instructs hunters how to hunt for deer and they prayed to it for pardon when deer were killed for food. In another Native American legend, the four cardinal directions and the winds that emanate from them are connected with the deer spirit. This reflects the connection between sound and pervasiveness — the cries of the deer radiate out to the four corners, so their nature is to control air and what air pervades. It is also said that were it not for the breath that the ancient Deer Spirit chief blew upon the simmering embers of the first fire, it would not have lit up at all. Thus the deer spirit has a share in the power inherent in the possession of that first fire. In this painting the children are learning from the Deer Spirit.

"In my dreams I often see children running after deer and rabbits. The older ones leading and telling the younger ones to go faster and to be still. These skills were encouraged at a very young age. The success of the hunt depended on their ability to run like the wind and be adept at their skills. Every part of the animal was used. Nothing went to waste. A portion was always saved for the elderly and orphaned so that none went hungry." -the artist
