Fox Spirit

"The Silent Wind" by Pat Calderone

The Fox spirit has a long history of being associated with magic and cunning. Because it is a creature of the night, it is often imbued with supernatural powers. The fox is often most visible at the times of dawn and dusk,  the “Between Times” when the magical world and the world in which we live intersect. It lives at the edges of forests and open land– the border areas.  It has the ability to blend in with the background and there are few animals that can outrun a fox.

It is believed by some cultures that foxes were capable of assuming human form. In ancient Chinese lore, the fox acquires the faculty to become human at the age of 50, and on its one hundredth birthday, it becomes a either a wizard or a beautiful maiden.

There are several American Indian tribes that tell tales of hunters who accidentally discover their wives were foxes. The Cherokees invoke fox spirit medicine to prevent frostbite. The Choctaw saw fox as the protector of the family unity. The Hopi shamans always wear fox fur in their healing rites. Apache credit the fox for sticking its tail into the flame and stealing fire for humans.

The fox brush or tail of has always been considered its most sacred part. When it runs, the tail is always in a horizontal position to the body and acts as a rudder. The tail also acts as an insulator from the cold for his nose and feet. There are few animals that can out run a fox. There legs are adapted for stamina. Their favorite gate is a trot and it has been said that they can trot forever without exhaustion. The fox walks  and runs on its toes and can easily run up trees if necessary.  The fox is also an excellent swimmer. Its hearing is extremely acute. They can pick up the squeal of a mouse over 150 yards away.

Most foxes have only one partner. They are very monogamous, but also live alone about five months of the year. A litter of fox cubs usually numbers from one to six. The fox is a survivor and a great hunter. In spite of encroachment on its territory and the history of being hunted. It still manages to survive its instincts are great.

Those who study animal totems link the fox spirit to clairaudience, the ability to hear spirits.
