Green turquoise jewelry. Ferroan turquoise is a technical term for green turquoise. Turquoise is formed from a complex recipe of copper, aluminum, phosphorus, water and other available invasive minerals that are present in the ground. Green turquoise occurs when there is iron existing in the mix. Many of these green turquoises are so similar in color that they are hard to tell one from another! Here is a description of a few of the more famous ones:
Pilot Mountain turquoise comes from Nevada. It was first discovered in 1908 and has been very productive. Today, however, it is worked on a small scale by one family who only mines it a couple of times per year, bringing out just 150-200 pounds of rough stone at a time. This adds to both its rarity and value.
The colors it produces is wide ranging with almost every color of blue and green. The matrix has mixed patterns of red, brown to black and a variety of spider web. The turquoise that comes from Pilot Mountain is a high grade hard turquoise, perfect for jewelry. Pilot Mountain turquoise can exhibit both light blue to dark green colors on the same stone. This graduation in color is unusual and makes jewelry with this turquoise very collectible.
King's Manassa is a very green turquoise mined in south central Colorado. This site, originally mined by Ancestral Pueblo peoples, was rediscovered in 1890 by gold prospector I.P. King, and his descendants still work the claim. King’s Manassa turquoise is best known for its brilliant greens and golden matrices, but blue and blue-green turquoise was found amid these deposits as well.
Emerald Valley turquoise comes from a Nevada Mine that produces a deep forest green turquoise. It makes very beautiful and unique jewelry and is rarely seen.
