Our Mayan purses are 100% cotton and handmade by the Mayan people indigenous to Guatemala. The fabric is woven by weaving cooperatives usually on a foot or treadle loom.  The treadle loom was introduced to the Mayan by the Spanish shortly after the Conquest in the 1500's.  Following the Spanish tradition, initially only men were the weavers. In these modern times, however, the women also use the treadle loom.  Before the Spanish arrived the women did all the weaving on what is called a backstrap loom.

The base fabric of all village clothing is cotton, grown in the lowland valleys.  Mayan purses are made from the same cotton cloth that is used for their clothing.  They are a great fashion item.  Made of colorful fabrics and embroidered beautifully, you will love the colors and exquisite designs that these Mayan purses exhibit.
