Red Coral Jewelry

It is traditional for Navajo made red coral jewelry to be set in combination with turquoise. This makes a very striking color combination. The existence of red coral being used for adornment throughout the world dates back over ten thousand years. The Indians of the American Southwest have always treasured this - "red gold". Hopis were using necklaces of coral and turquoise at their snake dances in the 1870's-1880's. At Zuni Indian dances, the deep red of this bead from the sea is still a favorite complement to silver and turquoise. With Navajo women, strands of coral beads are a symbol of success and social prominence....the standard being a minimum of ten strands at the time of a woman's thirtieth birthday. Vintage Navajo Three Strand Coral Necklace

These necklaces are very rare and hard to come by. The genuine coral tube beads on this 32" long three strand necklace are exquisite and have more uniformity in shape than what is normally found in coral beads today. The color is natural, un-dyed and the luster is very beautiful. Interspersed among the coral are handmade beads of silver and turquoise. The silver beads appear brassy in color due to the patina on them, but they are silver and you could put a shine on them with a light rubbing silver polish cloth. The necklace has been restrung with new squaw wrapping (at the back of the neck). $595
